Solar across the Sunshine Coast: our service area, explained
One grid, three councils, and a service area running from Caloundra to the Cooloola coast. Here is how we cover it and where each suburb page goes into detail.
Keystones Energy is based at Cooroibah in the north of the region. Our service area runs from Caloundra in the south, up through the coastal strip and Noosa Shire, west into the hinterland behind Nambour, Montville and Maleny, and north to Gympie and the Cooloola coast. That is a large area covering a Sunshine Coast population of roughly 346,500, and it is not one uniform place to install solar in.
This page is the regional overview. Where a suburb has design considerations worth writing about on their own, we have written a page about it, and those are linked below. If you would rather have a number than a briefing, the fastest route is the free quote page.
One distributor, three councils
Every grid-connected system in this region connects to the Energex network, so the connection process is the same whether you are at Kings Beach or Kenilworth. The planning side is not. Our service area spans Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Shire Council and Gympie Regional Council, and Noosa Shire in particular runs its own planning scheme rather than the Sunshine Coast one. Knowing which council a lot sits in matters before a layout is finalised.
The Energex connection is usually the long pole
For a grid-connected system, the application to Energex generally takes longer than the installation itself. The physical work on a residential system is typically one to two days; the end-to-end timeline from accepted quote to an operating system is usually two to four weeks, most of which is connection approval. We lodge and manage that paperwork rather than leaving it with you.
Coast, hinterland and rural are three different design problems
On the coastal strip, salt exposure drives hardware choice and inverter placement. In the hinterland behind Maleny, Montville and Mapleton, elevation is an advantage but ridgelines and tree cover create shading that has to be modelled properly. Out towards Gympie, larger blocks, shed roofs, pump loads and unreliable end-of-feeder supply push designs towards hybrid and off-grid. A quote that ignores which of those three you are in is a quote worth questioning.
Where we are quickest, and where we are not
We are north-based, so Noosa Shire, the hinterland north of Nambour and the Gympie region are our closest and fastest-response areas. We still service the southern coast at Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Kawana and Caloundra, but as scheduled work with booked appointment windows rather than same-day callouts. We would rather set that expectation at the start than miss it later.

Common questions about solar installation in Sunshine Coast
From Caloundra in the south through the whole coastal strip and Noosa Shire, west across the hinterland to Maleny, Montville, Mapleton and Kenilworth, and north through Gympie to Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach. Response times vary with distance: we are based at Cooroibah, so Noosa, the northern hinterland and Gympie are our fastest areas, and the southern coast is scheduled work.
A grid-connected system needs a connection application to Energex, and that approval normally sets your timeline rather than the installation does. Expect two to four weeks from accepted quote to a running system, with the physical install taking one to two days of that. We handle the application and the paperwork.
It can. Our service area covers three local governments: Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Shire Council and Gympie Regional Council. Noosa Shire administers its own planning scheme and applies character and heritage-related overlays across parts of the shire, so an address in Noosaville is not necessarily governed by the same document as one in Coolum. We check what applies to your lot before finalising a design.
Yes, in both directions. Hinterland properties often have good elevation and clean air, but ridgelines, gullies and mature tree cover create shading patterns that need to be modelled across the seasons rather than eyeballed. Coastal properties have simpler sun paths but need marine-rated mounting hardware and careful inverter placement to cope with salt-laden wind.
Solar panel costs in Sunshine Coast typically range from $8,000 to $20,000 for residential systems, depending on your home's energy needs and roof size.
