On an off-grid property, the inverter isn't just another box on the wall. It's the power station. It makes the AC supply for the whole house, manages the battery, decides when to start the generator, and takes the hit every time a pump or compressor kicks in. Get it wrong and nothing else in the system matters much.
The Selectronic SP PRO is one of the off-grid inverters we install across the Noosa hinterland and the Gympie region, alongside Victron. Here's our honest read on it.
Is the Selectronic SP PRO a good off-grid inverter?
Yes. The Selectronic SP PRO is a proven, Australian designed and manufactured multi-mode inverter-charger built for off-grid and hybrid systems. It runs from 3 kW to 20 kW continuous per unit, works with solar, batteries, generators and the grid, and carries a 5-year warranty that extends to 10 years when registered with Select.live monitoring. It's at its best on full-time off-grid homes, farms and fringe-of-grid properties where reliability and generator integration matter more than a slick phone app.
Its weak spots are mostly about convenience: the full configuration software runs only on Windows PCs, and it's a specialist product that needs an installer who knows it well.
What the SP PRO actually is
The current model is the SP PRO Series 2i, which Selectronic describes as an "intelligent multi-mode inverter". In plain terms it's a bi-directional sine wave inverter-charger:
- Inverter: turns battery DC into clean AC to run the property.
- Charger: takes AC from a generator or the grid and charges the battery.
- System manager: coordinates the solar, the battery, the generator and the grid, if there is one.
"Multi-mode" means the same unit can run a fully off-grid system or a grid-connected hybrid. According to Selectronic, it can move between hybrid and off-grid operation with simple on-site settings and no hardware change. That's genuinely useful on a block where the grid connection might come later, or might be dropped later.
Australian designed and built
Selectronic is an Australian company, and the SP PRO is designed and manufactured here. For an off-grid buyer that's more than a flag on the box. It means local engineering support, a product designed around Australian conditions and standards, and a manufacturer that isn't going to disappear from the market overnight.
Selectronic SP PRO model range

For bigger sites, multiple units can be combined using Selectronic's Powerchain system, up to 240 kW across three phases. That's well beyond a house, but it shows the platform scales to farms, communities and remote businesses.
Key features that matter on an off-grid property
Selectronic lists a lot of features. These are the ones that actually change how a system lives day to day.
Integrated generator control. The SP PRO can manage a backup generator directly, starting it when the battery needs help and stopping it afterwards. On most off-grid systems we recommend a generator, and this is where the SP PRO earns its keep.
AC or DC coupling. Solar can connect on the DC side through a charge controller, or on the AC side through a grid-type solar inverter. That flexibility helps when you're expanding an existing system or reusing gear.
Battery flexibility. It supports lead acid and a list of compatible managed lithium batteries. If you're replacing an old lead-acid bank with lithium, check the battery is on Selectronic's current compatibility list.
Multiple energy sources. Selectronic notes it works with solar, wind, hydro, diesel generators and grid supply.
Standards and grid compliance. For hybrid (grid-connected) systems it supports AS/NZS 4777 power quality modes and demand response modes, and Selectronic states it's CSIP-AUS compliant for emergency backstop with its Ubi 3 monitoring device.
Surge capability. Off-grid inverters live or die on how well they start motors. Selectronic highlights the SP PRO's surge capability, and in our experience that robustness is one of the reasons people choose it.
SP LINK and Select.live: monitoring and settings
SP LINK is Selectronic's software for the SP PRO. There are two versions:
- SP LINK (full version) is for system integrators. It gives access to over 400 settings for configuring and maintaining the system.
- SP LINK Monitor is for owners. It shows the same information but can't change the configuration.
The catch: SP LINK runs only on Windows PCs. It isn't available for Mac, Linux or mobile phones. If you want to check your system from your phone, that's what Select.live remote monitoring is for.
A practical point on firmware: Selectronic requires firmware 15.0 or higher for AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 compliance and 16.0 or higher for CSIP-AUS compliance. If you've got an older SP PRO on a grid-connected hybrid, it's worth asking your installer which firmware it's on.
Our advice for owners: use SP LINK Monitor or Select.live to look, and leave the settings to your installer. Off-grid settings are interlinked. A change that seems harmless, like a battery charge setpoint, can shorten battery life or stop the generator starting when it should.
SP PRO warranty
Selectronic's warranty for SP PRO models in Australia and New Zealand, effective 1 July 2021:
- Standard warranty: 5 years.
- 10 years if the warranty is registered within 180 days of purchase and a valid Select.live serial number is supplied at registration (conditions apply).
In other words, register the warranty and connect Select.live monitoring early. There's no good reason not to. Every Keystones install also carries our own 10-year workmanship warranty.
Selectronic vs Victron
These are the two names that come up most for off-grid inverters in Australia, and we install both.
| Selectronic SP PRO | Victron | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it's from | Australian designed and manufactured | Victron Energy is based in the Netherlands |
| Approach | One central inverter-charger that manages the whole system | A broad ecosystem of inverter-chargers and related components combined to suit |
| Power range | 3 kW to 20 kW per unit; up to 240 kW over three phases with Powerchain | Wide range, from small mobile systems to large installations |
| Monitoring | SP LINK (Windows PC) and Select.live | Victron's VRM remote monitoring portal |
| Standard warranty | 5 years, extendable to 10 with registration and Select.live | 5 years standard |
| Strengths | Australian support, robust off-grid focus, integrated generator control | Huge flexibility, from caravans and boats to homes |
Which is better, Selectronic or Victron? For a full-time off-grid home, both are capable, proven choices. Selectronic appeals if you value an Australian product with a single central "brain" and local support. Victron appeals if you want maximum flexibility, or the system needs to scale from small to large in a very modular way. For most properties the bigger factor is the installer's experience with the platform. We'd rather build with the one that suits your loads, battery and site than argue about badges.
Who the SP PRO suits (and who it doesn't)
It suits you if:
- You're building a full-time off-grid home and want reliable generator integration
- You're on a rural block where the grid is unreliable and you want a hybrid that can stand alone
- You value an Australian-made product with local support
- You have heavy motor loads like bore pumps that need strong surge capability
Look elsewhere if:
- You need a small 12V system for a caravan or a shed; the SP PRO is overkill
- You're on a standard suburban grid-connected home that just wants a battery; a hybrid inverter designed for that job is usually simpler and cheaper
- You want to change settings yourself from a phone app

Selectronic SP PRO troubleshooting: what owners can safely do
Off-grid systems hold a lot of stored energy, and the SP PRO is connected to battery banks, solar arrays and generators. Never open the inverter, battery enclosure or switchboard covers, and don't touch DC isolators, battery terminals or cabling. That's licensed electrical work, and in an off-grid system it's genuinely dangerous.
Here's what you can safely check before you call.
1. Write down what it's telling you. Note any message on the inverter's display or in Select.live or SP LINK Monitor, the time it happened, and what was running. This is the single most useful thing you can give an installer.
2. Check the battery state of charge. If the battery is low after a run of cloudy days, the system may be protecting itself. Reduce your loads and let the generator or the sun catch up.
3. Think about what just started. If the system shut down the moment a big load came on, like a pump, air conditioner, or several heavy appliances at once, you may have overloaded it. Switch those loads off before the system restarts.
4. Check the generator, if you have one. Is there fuel? Is it left in the mode your installer set for automatic starting? Has its own breaker tripped? Don't bypass anything; just note what you find.
5. If only the monitoring has dropped out, check whether your router or Wi-Fi password has changed. That's the most common reason remote monitoring goes quiet.
6. Don't change settings. If you've got the full SP LINK software, resist the urge to adjust setpoints. If a setting needs changing, your installer should do it.
Call straight away if you see or smell burning, see water inside any enclosure, hear arcing, or the system won't restart. Follow the shutdown procedure your installer left with you and don't attempt any further fault-finding.
We service and repair off-grid systems we didn't install, including SP PRO systems whose original installer has closed down. Fault-finding starts with a phone call; our solar repairs and servicing page has the details.
Our verdict
The Selectronic SP PRO is a serious off-grid inverter for people who need their power to work every day without fuss. It's Australian designed and built, it handles generators and heavy loads well, and Selectronic's warranty doubles to 10 years when you register and connect Select.live. The trade-offs are a Windows-only configuration tool and a need for an installer who knows the platform properly.
